Andy Plesser: (Video) BBC Taps Adobe for Digital Delivery of London 2012 Olympic Games, Streamed in the U.K.
SAN FRANCISCO - (Via Skype Video) Adobe will power live streaming and on-demand delivery to digital devices of the London 2012 Olympics for the BBC, says?Ashley Still, Director of Video Solutions at Adobe Systems in this interview with Beet.TV. The BBC will use Adobe's Project Primetime video technology platform to reach viewers in the United Kingdom via computers, smartphones, tablets and connected TVs.
"There will be more content available on the Internet than over TV," Still tells us in this video interview. "BBC is the first large customer we can talk about that is extensively using components of Project Primetime."
The Adobe tools, for instance, will allow the BBC to simulcast events live on digital devices, and then also turn those feeds into on-demand clips. The programming coverage will be accessible on both Apple and Android devices.
The London Olympics is being billed as the first digital Olympics. "You can really see the shifts that have happened in consumer adoption of new technology every two to four years. It's amazing for mobile," Still tells us.
NBC Sports is also using Adobe's Project Primetime in the United States.

Iron Maiden calls out fan for texting

People text each other from the oddest places these days -- bathrooms, roller coasters, water parks. But one fan was called out quite publicly when he decided to text rather continuously from, of all places, an Iron Maiden concert.
Bruce Dickinson, leader of the British heavy metal band, spotted the texter and screamed out, "Oh, for (expletive) sake, the guy with the bald head and the white shirt, you've been texting for the last (expletive) three songs. You're a (British expletive)!"
The scolding was captured on video during Maiden's concert at Klipsch Music Center in Indianapolis on July 19, and the video's quickly been passed around. Dickinson didn't spend much time worrying about the clueless fan. Right after calling him out, the band ripped into "Wasted Years."

A recent survey of U.K. and U.S. mobile gamers by PopCap shows that around 50% of respondents preferred their phone to PC, console, or dedicated handheld gaming console (like a PSP or Nintendo DS). Tablet owners ranked a bit higher with 57%. Despite the portability that tablets and smartphones offer, 69% reported to play on their phones at home on the couch (78% among tablet owners), 41% while watching TV (52% for tablet owners), and 57% while in bed (51%). 10% of the 602 American respondents had played mobile games while in a place of worship, driving a car, and/or while watching a movie at a theater. The survey's sample size was a little over a thousand-strong - take that as representative or not as you will.
With stuff like Ouya coming out of the woodwork, I'd be interested to see just how much Android manages to displace the traditional console gaming industry and which players are savvy enough to get with the times. So far, EA has done a great job of adapting to and addressing the mobile market, meanwhile Nintendo has been vocally against the app store model.
Will players really take to switching to mobile full-time, though? I know I've definitely spent less time on my Alienware since getting really involved with mobile games, but what about you guys? Is your Xbox getting jealous of your tablet?

Frontier Communications Partners with Hughes for Quicker Broadband
The demand for broadband is rising in almost every part of the world. With more and more people uploading large volumes of pictures, videos and voice messages, demand for higher speeds and more digital space is increasing at an unprecedented rate.
Looking to cater to this market, Frontier Communications, the largest provider of communications services concentrating on rural America, has signed a wholesale agreement with Hughes (News ? Alert) Network Systems, LLC (Hughes), a source of broadband satellite networks and services.
According to the agreement, Frontier will distribute satellite-based broadband services, branded Frontier Broadband, which will improve speed considerably. It will also have the ability to serve numerous households and small businesses within markets previously not served or underserved by all broadband providers, including cable.
Frontier Broadband provides highly-trained, 100 percent U.S.-based local installation, customer service and support teams. The company makes use of will the Hughes EchoStar XVII Satellite with JUPITER High-Throughput Technology, which will allow HughesNet Gen4 satellite Internet services for Frontier Broadband customers, the company stated in a news release.
According to Melinda White, executive vice president of revenue development for Frontier, ?We are very excited to offer a new, high-performance broadband Internet service. This is another example of Frontier?s unwavering commitment to making broadband access ubiquitous ? especially in rural America. We chose Hughes because it shares that vision and has the proven ability to bring high-quality technology to customers around the world.?

LIFE ElderCare receives Sobrato Family Foundation Fundraising ...

LIFE ElderCare, a nonprofit organization serving frail, homebound seniors in Fremont, Newark and Union City, was recently awarded a Challenge Grant from the Sobrato Family Foundation. The grant will be used to support general operations and community programming for the organization?s Meals On Wheels program. This is the third Challenge Grant the organization has received from the Foundation.
The initial grant amount of $10,000 was received this month. If LIFE ElderCare successfully matches this amount with new or increased cash donations by June 30, 2013, the Foundation will increase the award by another $10,500 resulting in an overall $30,500 increase in funding.
?During our last fiscal year, we served over 100,000 meals to seniors with the help of 236 community volunteers,? said Liz Jardin, Interim Executive Director at LIFE ElderCare. ?Donations from individuals and businesses are needed to provide meals to those who are most at risk of suffering from malnutrition.?
Since 1975, LIFE ElderCare has been providing direct services to homebound seniors living in Fremont, Newark and Union City, California. Their four programs, Meals on Wheels, Friendly Visitors, VIP Rides and Falls Prevention promote healthy aging and enable independent living for as long as safely possible. Located in California?s Silicon Valley, the Sobrato Family Foundation?s investments are targeted toward strong community-based organizations that promote self-reliance and economic independence, and positively contribute to the quality of life for economically, physically and/or emotionally challenged individuals in Santa Clara, San Mateo and Southern Alameda Counties.
