Snowstorm hits Northeast, parts of Ohio

NEW YORK (AP) ? A widespread winter storm dumped snow over the Northeast and parts of Ohio on Saturday, just days after the regions were hit by another storm moving from the nation's midsection.

The National Weather Service expected up to a foot of snow in parts of southern New England, with the heaviest snowfall possibly in Providence, R.I., and Boston, which declared parking bans to allow snow removal vehicles to clean the streets. Winter storm warnings were in effect in parts of those states and in Connecticut.

New York City and Philadelphia saw a mix of rain and snow as the storm moved in from the west. In Ohio, Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati saw about 2 to 5 inches of snow by Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

"Expect those accumulations to kind of work their way northeastward through much of New York state and much of New England," weather service meteorologist Brian Hurley said.

Drivers throughout the regions were warned to be cautious. Officials lowered the speed limit on much of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, about 300 miles from the Ohio state line to east-central Pennsylvania, from 65 mph to 45 mph.

About 20 vehicles piled up in a storm-related chain-reaction crash on Interstate 93 in New Hampton, N.H., police said, and five people were injured.

In Albany, N.Y., a regional jet skidded into a snow bank at the airport and became stuck, temporarily stranding passengers en route to Chicago. The 66 passengers and four crew members aboard the GoJet Airlines flight, operating as United Express, were put on a bus and sent back to the airport. There were no injuries, and the incident didn't cause any other flight delays, airport authority spokesman Doug Myers said.

Flights at Philadelphia's airport, mostly arrivals, were delayed about an hour, spokeswoman Stacy Jackson said.

Parts of southern Indiana saw 6 to 8 inches of snow from the storm, some in areas that had received more than a foot from a blizzard earlier in the week.

That blizzard was part of a storm system that dumped more than a foot of snow in some places and has been blamed for at least 16 deaths. It also spawned more than a dozen tornadoes in Alabama, the National Weather Service said.

But Saturday's snow wasn't as heavy as that of the previous storm, the weather service said.

Crock Pot Vegan Black Bean Soup

veganblackbeansoup1

Last night was heavenly. Mr. Prevention and I purchased a new, rather large, LED TV for our bedroom. I snuggled into bed in my new Cubs onesie (um, no joke) at 9:30, watching Shipping Wars and flipped through a new cookbook my sister-in-law got for me ? The Moosewood Restaurant Cooking for Health: More Than 200 New Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes for Delicious and Nutrient-Rich Dishes. I have a lot of sticky notes on pages and pages of recipes I want to try.

I am steadfast in my belief (knowledge!) that vegetarian meals are not only more wholesome in that they include more vegetables, but are also lower in cost than most meaty or fishy fare. I have no plans to omit meat or seafood from my diet?I just don?t think I could do it, but I love having go-to recipes that are chock-full of 100% good-for-me ingredients.

Enter: Crock Pot Vegan Black Bean Soup.

veganblackbeansoup2

My mom and I were just talking about flavors and how important it is to flavor foods properly. If you don?t enjoy a recipe, consider first the flavors that you like and/or don?t like before shelving the idea all together.

We all have preferences, and in case you hadn?t noticed, I love ingredients such as cumin and cilantro for their boldness and versatility. Both of these same ingredients were used in the Black Bean & Quinoa Veggie Burgers I posted just a few days ago. The best part about finding spices and herbs that you love is that they are essentially calorie-free and contain fiber, antioxidants, and phytochemicals that you can?t get from just any food. I can?t wait to start growing herbs in my AeroGarden. Hopefully it will work since winter has finally killed off my outdoor herbs!

veganblackbeansoup3

I?ve been wanting to make black bean soup for a really long time. I knew I wanted to use dried beans and the crock pot. From there, I consulted a few recipes and pulled from each what appealed to me most. The beauty is this soup is that you can add, or not add, whatever you wish. Similar to the Black Bean & Quinoa Veggie Burgers, I may add a chipotle in adobo sauce the next time I make this soup ? I just love those peppers and all their packed-in heat and spice!

Cuddle up with a bowl of this and a big piece of crusty Italian bread?it may just be the best decision you make all winter long!

Crock Pot Vegan Black Bean Soup adapted from Food.com and Noreen Cooks

1 lb dried black beans
1/2 red onion, diced
1 green bell peppers, diced
2 jalapenos, diced
2 tsp cumin
1 1/2 Tbsp chili powder
1/4 tsp thyme
1/2 tsp oregano
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
2 bay leaves
3 cups low-sodium vegetable broth
6 cloves garlic, minced
28 oz can no-salt added diced tomatoes
3 Tbsp red wine vinegar

Directions:

Soak the beans in 1-2 quarts of water overnight at room temperature.

Drain the beans and combine all ingredients in a large crock pot, stir well. Cover and cook on HIGH for 9-12 hours. Stir before serving hot.

Yield: ~10 cups (varies with cooking time)

Nutrition Information (per cup): 123 calories; 02. g. fat; 0 mg. cholesterol; 295 mg. sodium; 26.1 g. carbohydrate; 6.7 g. fiber; 7.2 g. protein

Result: As a lover of black bean soup I am thrilled to find a simple soup that is not only made in the crock pot, but that is also vegan and gluten-free. This soup really couldn?t be any easier to make. Be sure to leave 1-2 inches at the top of your crock as this soup does get hot and boils some. I love the long cook time that I can throw this in and not worry about throughout the day. I was skeptical about my crock on HIGH all day long, but it was perfect! Serve this with some cilantro and crusty bread. You?ll be hard pressed to find anything as delicious or healthy! Packed with fiber and protein with virtually no fat. This soup may be the perfect healthy, low-calorie winter meal!

?TGIF! It?s hard being at work when so much of the hospital is still on holiday vacation!

P.S. Be sure to ?Like? Prevention RD on Facebook for post updates there! Lots of good stuff coming with the new year?you don?t want to miss it!

Be well,

Labbler: Does The Music Industry Need A Social Network? - hypebot

Labbler-logoLabbler is a relatively new music industry social network that is now in public beta. It plans to connects "Artists, Labels, Booking Agencies, Venues, Media and Fans as well as providing tools for all business needs of these groups." But though the sites looks nice and these groups of people all do need to connect in various ways, it's unclear why they would use Labbler to do so.

Labbler's website has a nice design that earned it some positive attention over the summer.

Quick Look at Labbler Interface

Labbler's features are straightforward with profiles, activity feeds and networking tools. Music-specific features include SoundCloud track imports, Beatport data imports and track uploads.

The homepage includes an extensive list of features and also the primary roles and business pages that can be included:

  • Artist
  • Label
  • Club
  • Media
  • Promoter
  • Booking

Though their self-description mentions fans there really isn't a clear role for them to play. In addition, the above categories plus Events are featured as navigation tabs across the social network and this also excludes fans as a category so it's currently not really designed for fans.

That may actually be a good thing since business networking and fan contact seem difficult to mix effectively.

As a music industry network the biggest problem facing Labbler is that artists and business people are already networking through a variety of services including LinkedIn and Twitter. But music industry specific networks have failed to break through and no one has been able to become the LinkedIn or Twitter of the music industry.

That means the challenge of giving people a reason to use Labbler looms much larger than effective design and operation of such a website.

Liquid crystal research, future applications advance

Dec. 24, 2012 ? Contributing geometric and topological analyses of micro-materials, University of Massachusetts Amherst mathematician Robert Kusner aided experimental physicists at the University of Colorado (UC) by successfully explaining the observed "beautiful and complex patterns revealed" in three-dimensional liquid crystal experiments. The work is expected to lead to creation of new materials that can be actively controlled.

Kusner is a geometer, an expert in the analysis of variational problems in low-dimensional geometry and topology, which concerns properties preserved under continuous deformation such as stretching and bending. His work over 3 decades has focused on the geometry and topology of curves, surfaces and other spaces that arise in nature, such as soap films, knots and the shapes of fluid droplets. Kusner agrees with physicist and lead author Ivan Smalyukh of UC Boulder that their collaboration is the first to show in experiments that some of the most fundamental topological theorems hold up in real materials. Their findings appear in the current early online issue of Nature.

UMass Amherst's Kusner explains, "There are two important aspects of this work. First, the experimental work by the Colorado team, who fabricated topologically complex micro-materials allowing controlled experiments of three-dimensional liquid crystals. Second, the theoretical work performed by us mathematicians and theoretical physicists while visiting the University of California Santa Barbara's Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP). We provided the geometric and topological analysis of these experiments, to explain the observed patterns and predict what patterns should be seen when experimental conditions are changed."

Kusner was the lone mathematician among four organizers of last summer's workshop on "Knotted Fields" at KITP, which led to this work. The workshop engaged about a dozen other mathematicians and about twice as many theoretical and experimental physicists in a month-long investigation of the interplay between low-dimensional topology and what physicists call "soft matter."

In their experiments, the physicists at UC Boulder showed that tiny topological particles injected into a liquid crystal medium behave in a manner consistent with established theorems in geometry and topology, Kusner says. The researchers say they have thus identified approaches for building new materials using topology.

UC Boulder's Smalyukh and colleagues set up the experiment by first creating colloids, solutions in which tiny particles are dispersed but not dissolved in a host medium, such as milk, paint and shaving cream. Specifically, they injected tiny, different-shaped particles into a liquid crystal, which behaves something like a liquid and a solid. Once injected into a liquid crystal, the particles behaved as predicted by topology.

Smalyukh says, "Our study shows that interaction between particles and molecular alignment in liquid crystals follows the predictions of topological theorems, making it possible to use these theorems in designing new composite materials with unique properties that cannot be encountered in nature or synthesized by chemists. These findings lay the groundwork for new applications in experimental studies of low-dimensional topology, with important potential ramifications for many branches of science and technology."

For example, he adds, these topological liquid crystal colloids could be used to upgrade current liquid crystal displays like those used in laptops and television screens, to allow them to interact with light in new, more energy efficient ways.

Panasonic P02E smartphone appears in FCC flesh, looks to be Japanbound

Earlier this month, a supposed Panasonic P02-E smartphone popped up on an NTT DoCoMo Japanese server log, but such scant evidence required more than a few grains of salt to swallow it. Now, the ever-reliable FCC has revealed the device to be an actual thing, and putting the two sources together would make it a 5-inch, 1,920 x 1080, Android 4.1.2 smartphone with a quad-core, 1.5GHz APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, along with LTE and NFC capability. Don't get too excited if those specs float your boat, however -- judging by the retractable TV antenna, NTT DoCoMo origins and general Panasonic elusiveness in the west, it looks to be aimed squarely at the Japanese market only.

Police investigate whether NBC's Gregory violated gun law

Washington police are investigating whether NBC's David Gregory broke the law by holding up what appeared to be a 30-round gun magazine on Sunday's Meet the Press despite being denied permission by police to bring the weaponry on the show.

It is illegal in the district to possess a "large capacity ammunition feeding device."

Gwendolyn Crump, director of the Office of Communications for the Washington Metropolitan Police Department, told ABC News, "NBC contacted MPD inquiring if they could utilize a high capacity magazine for their segment. NBC was informed that possession of a high capacity magazine is not permissible and their request was denied. This matter is currently being investigated."

Another Washington DC police officer and spokesperson Tisha Gant said the situation was "being investigated," but would give no other details including what exactly is under investigation.

A section in the D.C. criminal code says "no person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm." The section stipulates that "the term large capacity ammunition feeding device means a magazine," or similar devices.

Gregory held up what looked like a 30-bullet gun magazine when interviewing the National Rifle Association's executive vice president and CEO Wayne LaPierre on Sunday. Gregory pressed the NRA head on whether fewer children would have been killed during the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting on Dec. 14th if the shooter had access to less ammunition.

Since the interview, conservative media and gun rights activists said that Gregory appeared to have violated the district's gun law. Police subsquently confirmed they were investigating.

NBC News declined to comment through a spokesperson.

ABC News' George Sanchez and Steven Portnoy contributed to this report.

Social Media for the Local Business Owner - Social ... - WriterAccess

You may have noticed the World Wide Web over the last few years has caused a shift in the way business is conducted today.

The Web?s Effect on Business

The Web has redefined the boundaries for traditional brick and mortar businesses and their online counterparts, and that hasn?t gone unnoticed by many of today?s best online web content providers.

And while we?ve stayed on top of these changes that have happened over the last few years, many traditional businesses were left by the wayside because they continued to do business with blinders on.

They didn?t realize that what worked in the traditional business world would not carry over as well to the Web, because the rules of real world commerce don?t apply to their web based counterparts.

Adjusting to a New Life on the Web

With their pockets overflowing with more than enough cash to spare, many larger retailers hired companies that specialized in internet marketing, while all the small business owner could do was compete with them on a lesser scale.

But local small business owners aren?t conducting business in the same waters alongside their larger counterparts. They?re swimming in smaller ponds, but they still have limitations?and their biggest limitations are their advertising budgets.

Many small local business owners tend to shy away from anything other than traditional advertising because they?re already familiar with it, even though they realize that it?s also very expensive.

But for a fraction of the cost of a traditional advertising campaign, a savvy small business owner can work with a local online content provider and use social media?s power to build their brand effectively.

The Power of Social Media Branding

A small local business can gain more exposure from a marketing campaign, specifically targeted to their local market, instead of through a single traditional advertising method.

Most small business owners have the wrong idea about Facebook and Twitter. Their first impression of both of these social media platforms is that they?re both a waste of time, a viewpoint reinforced by their kids? fixation with them.

Frankly, they don?t understand the powerful effect Facebook and Twitter can have combined as part of an online marketing campaign.

A small business owner can take advantage of Facebook by creating a fan page for their business. A Facebook fan page can be used to announce special events, sales promotions, and offer coupons.

Twitter can be used in tandem with a Facebook fan page, tweeting anything that?s been announced on the fan page. Twitter can also be used during a live event, tweeting things that your followers would be interested in, all in real time as they?re happening.

Other Social Media Channels to Consider

Other social media channels that drive targeted traffic to small business sites are:

  • StumbleUpon
  • Reddit
  • Pinterest
  • Tumblr

These sites are tools that should be used to drive traffic ideally to a landing page on a small business website, one that?s been optimized for specific keywords relevant to a related product, service or sales event.

The YouTube Age of Video

And then there is video. YouTube is a viable social media channel that lends credibility and strengthens your brand and your message.

Video may not be the first thing a small business owner would immediately turn to, but its power to connect globally is undeniable. One YouTube video has the potential to be viewed by thousands of local customers.

But a YouTube video isn?t limited to just a single geographic location, instead it is broadcasted for all eyes to see.

Place that video on the business owner?s site and you?ve created a marketing juggernaut, and again the out of pocket cost to the small business owner?s marketing budget is zero.

The Great Equalizer

Social Media automatically levels the playing field for the small business owner, giving them the power to not only brand their business on both a local and national level, but without breaking their bank.

How Utilising Umbrella Companies Can Be Great for a Small Business

business How Utilising Umbrella Companies Can Be Great for a Small BusinessIndividuals who are planning to start their own business know that they will need all the help that they can get. ?There are so many things to be considered, particularly in the early days of the business, that it can help to have experienced advice on hand as well as someone there to shoulder some of the company?s daily administrative burden. ?In the current economic climate, more and more people are looking to leave the job market to work for themselves, so receiving a helping hand could be a very welcome prospect. ??

What is an umbrella company?

An umbrella company is an organisation that the freelancer or contractor will join as an ?employee.?
Even though they are running their own business, finding their own clients and planning their own workload, freelancers are officially classed as employees of the umbrella company. ?This way, the company can deal with much of the administration of the business, including income tax and national insurance. ?These are dealt with on a PAYE basis, so there is no need to worry about a tax return at the end of the financial year. ?The umbrella company will also be able to explain which expenses can be claimed legally as part of the contract in order to help the freelancers maximise their income.

The umbrella company will also appoint an account manager to each freelancer.? This individual will be happy to talk through any issues that may arise and explain the process in detail. ?This is a level of support that is not available to those who choose to become a limited company right away.

How does it work?

Each week or at the end of a short-term contract, the freelancer will complete a timesheet and send it in to the umbrella company. ?The staff there will then present the client with an invoice and deal with the financial side of the business. ?They are responsible for chasing monies owed, including expenses, and will pay the freelancer once they have deducted tax, national insurance and the agency fee.

For those who are just starting out, this allows more concentration to be placed on developing the enterprise, finding new contracts and sales and ensuring that the business is on its feet before considering becoming a limited company. ?It is also the ideal solution for those who want to undertake some freelance work while looking for a permanent job, as it saves a great deal of administrative work on short-term contracts.

Those who try to deal with tax and national insurance during the initial days of the business will find that there is a lot of information to wade through. ?Simply handing this matter over to experienced administrators to deal with instead can be an attractive prospect.

Starting a business can be a daunting task, and it is issues such as taxation that put many people off making the leap from employee to business owner. ?With the umbrella company as a stepping stone in the middle, making the transition is so much simpler. ?In fact, many people have found it much easier to get their new ventures off the ground this way.

Dubai's Most Customer Friendly Businesses: And the winners - Zawya

By Staff Juma Al Majid Automobiles gets highest rating in Automobiles; Lulu top in Hypermarkets, Electronics The Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection (CCCP) sector in the Department of Economic Development ( DED ) in Dubai has announced the first-ever index of businesses in Dubai classified on the basis consumer-friendliness.

Juma Al Majid automobiles won the highest in both the overall rating and the Automobiles category while Lulu Hypermarkets stood top in both the Hypermarkets and Electronics categories.

The indexing was based on customer service levels in 24 leading outlets in the Hypermarkets, Automobiles and Electronics categories and a survey of 1,700 consumers in Dubai.

The key criteria in the classification were: consumer satisfaction and consumer perception of the business (60 per cent); the number of consumer complaints received and the time taken by the business to solve the complaint (20 per cent); and a comparative analysis of product prices in the outlet and its competitors (20 per cent).

DED said in a media statement today that the annual index focused on hypermarkets, automobiles and electronics since these three categories account for more than 60 per cent of the consumer spending.

The outlets chosen were also those with the biggest market share in their respective sectors.

According to the survey findings, Carrefour stood top in terms of customer loyalty in hypermarkets with a strong preference among 90 per cent of the consumers, and scored the highest - 69 per cent - in consumer loyalty in the Electronics sector. Al Nabooda Automobiles enjoys the highest level of customer satisfaction in car sales while Al Tayer Automobiles and Arabian Automobile share the top spot in after-sales service.

Among Hypermarkets, Lulu got the highest customer satisfaction rate while E-max got the highest consumer satisfaction in the electronics sector. The survey also showed 89 per cent of consumers go back to their car dealer for routine service.

Launched earlier this year, the consumer-friendliness index aims to promote service excellence, competitiveness and cordial relations between consumers and retailers while also building awareness on consumer rights and protecting them in line with DED 's strategic objective to encourage best practices in the retail sector.

Omar Bushahab, CEO of CCCP, said: "The Department of Economic Development believes healthy competition will always bring improved service to customers and help businesses grow faster. Our approach in rating consumer-friendliness mainly focused on consumer perceptions of the service available at leading retail outlets and the factors driving customer loyalty."

"Consumer satisfaction and perception carried the biggest weight as the index is a measure of consumer-friendliness. The time taken to resolve complaints was considered as it indicates the customer relations and culture of the retail outlet," said Mohammed Lootah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of CCCP.

"The index will be a reliable benchmark for businesses in enhancing customer service and customer loyalty We are looking at expanding the survey next year by introducing more categories, thus also involving more outlets and consumers," added Lootah.

DED assigned the indexing process to an external market research firm to ensure transparency in the process. The survey was done through e-mailed questionnaires to allow consumers to express their opinions freely and without any pressure from the retailers.

The Department of Economic Development also held introductory workshops with the owners of companies and establishments covered by the classification to introduce the criteria, and elicit their views in order to make the process as accurate and comprehensive as possible.

'Family Guy,' 'American Dad' Pulled By Fox In Wake Of Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting

Fox has decided to replace all-new episodes of Sunday night's "Family Guy" and "American Dad" with repeats, a network source confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

Due to the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., which left 28 people (including 20 children) dead on Dec. 14, Fox made the change as to avoid airing any potentially sensitive content during this heartbreaking time.

The new episode of "Family Guy," "Jesus, Mary and Joseph!" and "American Dad's" "Minstrel Krampus" will be replaced by repeats of "Grumpy Old Man" at 9 p.m. and "Wheels & The Legman and The Case of Grandpa's Key" at 9:30 p.m., respectively, The Futon Critic revealed.

family guy american dad pulled

The network has also decided not to air the 7 p.m. repeat of "The Cleveland Show" titled "Die Semi-Hard." Instead, that episode has been replaced by another repeat, "Menace II Secret Society."

New episodes of "The Cleveland Show" (7:30 p.m.), "The Simpsons" (8 p.m.) and "Bob's Burgers" (8:30 p.m.) will air as scheduled.

Family Guy has been pulled by Fox in the past. After a string of storms and tornadoes left a path of destruction throughout the South in April 2011, Fox canceled the hurricane-themed crossover episodes of "Family Guy," "American Dad" and "The Cleveland Show" from its schedule.

Yesterday, Syfy also changed it's schedule due to the tragedy in Newtown. "Haven" was pulled from the network's Friday lineup due to its storyline about school violence. Syfy has yet to decide when the episode, titled "Reunion," will air.

  • Charles Montgomery Burns/Donald Trump

    C. Montgomery Burns may not share Trump's signature comb-over, but there's not much else the two corporate overlords don't have in common. Aside from their ostentatious wealth (Forbes magazine ranked both <a href="http://www.forbes.com/lists/fictional15/2011/profile/c-montgomery-burns.html" target="_hplink">Burns</a>' and <a href="http://www.forbes.com/lists/2010/10/billionaires-2010_Donald-Trump_U5WX.html" target="_hplink">Trump's</a> net worth in the billions) the two power brokers boast a history of corporate ventures that have left hordes trembling at their feet. Though we have to admit -- Burns' trademark "Excellent" beats Trump's "You're fired" any day.

  • Lurleen Lumpkin/Sarah Palin

Lurleen Lumpkin has made appearances on "The Simpsons" as a pretty, ambitious aspiring celebrity who knows how to work a crowd and bag TV appearances. She also has a certain good old American charm that feels awfully familiar. We wouldn't be surprised if Palin embarks on a country singing tour when her fake political career runs out of steam.

  • Rich Texan/Rick Perry

Texas Governor Rick Perry might actually out-Rich Texan the version from "The Simpsons," the unnamed Rich Texan. For starters, Perry once shot a coyote while walking his dog. On the other hand, Perry doesn't block his beautiful crop of hair with a ten-gallon hat like Springfield's version.

  • Ned Flanders/Rick Santorum

Undoubtedly, we'd prefer Ned Flanders as a next door neighbor over Rick Santorum. Because even though Flanders and Santorum share a dogmatic interpretation of the Bible, Ned doesn't impose his beliefs on his others. Santorum, on the other hand, has long voiced the opinion that non-Christians and gay people are hardly "okily dokily."

  • Mayor Joe Quimby/Rudy Giuliani

Two-term NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani may not have the devilish track record of his Simpson's counterpart Joe Quimby. The longtime mayor of Springfield has unabashedly admitted to fraud, taking extended European vacations, and hunting down his enemies on the taxpayers' dime. But Giuliani is decidedly Quimby-esque in his love of the spotlight.

  • Bleeding Gums Murphy/Jimmy McMillan

Jimmy "The Rent is Too Damn High" McMillan parlayed his New York gubernatorial bid into a musical career. If he releases an album with a title half as inspired as "Sax on the Beach" like Lisa Simpson's jazz hero Bleeding Gums Murphy, the likeness is impeccable.

  • Chief Wiggum/Newt Gingrich

As longtime head of the Springfield Police Department, Chief Wiggum has years of crime-fighting (and even more so, ineptitude) under his belt. But you can't blame the guy for trying. Wiggum's repeated slip-ups haven't prevented the earnest officer from charging on, a quality Jon Stewart <a href="http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-may-18-2011/fast-dive" target="_hplink">recently identified</a> in Newt Gingrich. If only Newt had a son half as funny as Ralph Wiggum, we'd want to keep him around.

  • Helen Lovejoy/Michele Bachmann

Michele Bachmann may want to use Helen Lovejoy's shrieking catchphrase, "Won't somebody think of the <i>children!</i>" as her campaign slogan. After all, Bachmann certainly has thought of them enough -- she claims to have <a href="http://communities.washingtontimes.com/neighborhood/politics-raising-children/2011/jun/15/michele-bachmann-uses-gopdebates-elevate-case-fost/" target="_hplink">raised 23 foster kids</a> as well as five of her own. Plus, despite her small-government credentials, she's so intent on imposing sexual morality that we could easily see her getting up in arms about Springfield's burlesque house.

  • Milhouse Van Houten/Tim Pawlenty

Milhouse' soft-spoken nature has made him an easy target for schoolyard bullies as well as his best friend Bart, earning him the title of "little wiener" from Homer. But that seems like a generous insult considering the names being thrown at the mild-mannered Tim Pawlenty. A recent article in <em><a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/06/so-what-if-tim-pawlenty-is-boring/240462/" target="_hplink">The Atlantic</a></em> argued "the case for electing a bland, uncharismatic president in 2012," and in response to the hints Pawlenty posted on his members-only Facebook page before announcing his candidacy, the folks over at <a href="http://wonkette.com/440978/tim-pawlenty-about-to-officially-announce-hes-boring" target="_hplink">Wonkette</a> wrote "Here's something that's not a secret: Tim Pawlenty is still calling himself 'T-Paw' to pretend he's a real human being with a real personality who people care enough about to give a nickname."

  • Troy McClure/Mitt Romney

"Hi, I'm Mitt Romney. You may remember me from such GOP primaries as the ones I won in 2008 and the ones I didn't win in 2008." Romney appears to currently be the frontrunner for the 2012 Republican nomination, but one gaffe could result in hosting filmstrips and after-school specials for the rest of his life like his kindred spirit Troy McClure. But as long as Romney avoids a fish fetish (like McClure), we think he'll be fine.

  • Blue Haired Lawyer/Paul Ryan

The Blue Haired Lawyer has shown up many times on "The Simpsons" over the years, usually as an attorney for Mr. Burns. Cold, calculating and fierce in the courtroom, the Blue Haired Lawyer would make a great chairman of the House Budget Committee. And with Rep. Ryan's eyes being the same color as the lawyer's hair, it's a match made in bureaucratic heaven.

  • Luigi Risotto/Herman Cain

By now, many know Herman Cain's unusual backstory; before throwing his hat into the election ring, the GOP frontrunner worked for Coca-Cola, Pillsbury, and other food companies before becoming CEO of Godfather's Pizza. It seems "The Simpsons" predicted such a tale: Springfield's resident pizza man Luigi Risotto was revealed to serve on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association when he's not making pies.

  • Superintendent Chalmers/Chris Christie

It's not difficult to imagine how Springfield's dogmatic school Superintendent Gary Chalmers would react to the news that a public servant--New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, for example--had arrived to his son's baseball game <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/02/chris-christie-helicopter_n_870325.html" target="_hplink">via helicopter</a>. But for all his strict enforcement of school rules, the militant Chalmers has been known to make some pretty bad decisions himself, like replacing Principal Skinner with Ned Flanders. It still remains to be seen, however, whether Christie's <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/11/chris-christie-schools_n_875262.html" target="_hplink">controversial plans</a> for education reform will transform New Jersey public schools into--as Chalmers puts it--"a hell of a toboggan ride!"

Ron Conway: The Painting

conwaypaintingRon Conway, Silicon Valley’s best known angel investor, got quite a gift this evening. Laurene Jobs, the wife of the late Steve Jobs, dropped by the Conway annual holiday party this evening and unveiled what I can only describe as an epic painting of the man. It was hung on the wall and just about everyone in attendance took a picture. The painting is based on a photo taken of Ron and his dog Coco for a Fortune article earlier this year. I tried to steal it because I thought the painting really should be up at the CrunchFund offices (as a conversation piece). Security suggested that was a bad idea. The party was significantly less festive than previous years because of the horrendous shootings in Connecticut earlier today. Conway’s toast was mostly about the families affected. Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was at the party – Conway rightfully called her an American hero.

(AP) ? The women's basketball team at Mission College expected the bleachers to be full and the hecklers ready when its newest player made her home court debut.

In the days leading up to the game, people had plenty to say about 6-foot-6-inch, 220-pound Gabrielle Ludwig, who joined the Lady Saints as a mid-season walk-on and became, according to advocates, the first transsexual to play college hoops as both a man and a woman.

Coach Corey Cafferata worried the outside noise was getting to his players, particularly the 50-year-old Ludwig.

A pair of ESPN radio hosts had laughed at her looks, referring to her as "it." And online threats and anonymous calls prompted the two-year college to assign the Navy veteran of Operation Desert Storm a safer parking space next to the gym and two police guards.

Last week, Ludwig gathered her 10 teammates at practice and offered to quit. This was their time to shine, she told the group of 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds. She didn't want to be a distraction for the team. The other women said if Ludwig, whom they nicknamed "Big Sexy" and "Princess," didn't play, they wouldn't either.

Didn't she know she was the glue holding the team together?

"Then let's just play basketball," she replied solemnly, looking each teammate in the eye.

A lifelong basketball lover, Ludwig has been helping coach and working out with the Saints since the beginning of the school year, but she only received conference clearance to compete on the last day of November. She took the court as No. 42 the next day, scoring three points on four free throws in about seven minutes of play. Last weekend, during her first home game, she scored eight points in 11 minutes, Facebook friend requests from the opposing team ? and not a single heckle.

"I got exactly what I always wanted, just to fit in and be normal like everyone else," Ludwig said.

The story of how she ended up in a basketball uniform again would inspire comparisons to "The Natural" or other tales of middle-aged redemption were it not for gender. Introduced to the sport as an impressively tall 7th grade boy, she played on her high school team as Robert John Ludwig, then one season at a community college on Long Island in New York. After she dropped out, her court appearances were limited to pickup games.

The basketball bug returned 12 years ago, when her daughter from her second marriage, then 7, started playing youth basketball and Ludwig signed on as her coach. Ludwig kept coaching other people's children when her daughter moved on to high school and still works with hundreds of middle school girls every year.

Her transition from a male coach to a female coach five years ago raised questions, but parents generally accepted her decision warmly, she said. So did the women she played with in a couple of intramural leagues.

What the naysayers do not know, she said, is that Ludwig is not the same player she was as a 24-year-old male. She has less muscle and height, because of female hormones she takes. And at her age, she has to work to keep up.

"Yeah, I hit with a little more punch down low, but that's because I weigh 220 pounds, but I am not the only 220 woman out there," she said. "It's different now. My body has changed, my strength has changed, my attitude has changed."

While coaching a youth game on the Mission court last year she met Cafferata. They kept in touch, and when Ludwig half-jokingly asked if he had a spot for her, he said he might.

"The only thing I had to do is talk to my potential teammates and say, 'Hey, do you have room for me? This is where I am, this is where I've been, and I really love this game. Can I play with y'all?' And it was a resounding, 'Hell yeah!'"

Cafferata is tactful when asked whether Ludwig's size and former gender give the Saints an unfair advantage. A self-described champion of underdogs ? his roster includes a player who is deaf and others with learning disabilities ? the coach is rooting for Ludwig all the way. But to become a starter, she will need to work on endurance and speed.

"Gabrielle has earned a spot on this team," he said. "She practices hard. She runs hard. She is no different from anyone on the team ? she is a great, coachable player."

As someone living as a woman and taking female hormones since 2007, Ludwig was eligible to play in the NCAA. Transgender student athletes who have taken medication to suppress testosterone for a year may compete on women's teams under a policy adopted last year.

The California Community College Athletic Association had another hoop for Ludwig. Because its rules base gender on a student's birth certificate, she would need a new one. Ludwig, who had sex reassignment surgery over the summer, petitioned a judge and obtained her papers on Nov. 30.

Ludwig, who turns 51 this month, acknowledged that part of her motivation for playing women's basketball was to be a role-model for transgender youth. She finds hope, if not gratification in the temporary suspensions ESPN radio hosts Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin received this week because of the remarks they made about her. But she wants her court accomplishments ? not her gender change ? to draw comments.

"If men think that women's basketball is easy, let them spend a day out here and get their butt kicked," she said.

Mission College Athletic Director Mike Perez was all for Ludwig playing. He admires her for working a fulltime professional job ? as a systems engineer for a pharmaceutical company ? while carrying a full course load in computer administration. He also has seen the way her young teammates look up to Ludwig "and not just because she's tall."

"I could tell that one, she was a person of substance and two, somebody who was really sincere about what they were trying to do," Perez said. "Many people have different views, but the most important view is she ... has a right to be on this basketball team."

Teammate Amy Woo, 19, said Ludwig has brought a maternal influence, helping the team keep problems in perspective.

"We all love her," Woo said. "If someone is going to talk against her, they are talking against all of us because it's like she is part of a family."

Best of Our Blogs

I picked up a little book called Care of the Soul by Thomas Moore on a trip recently. It was one of those ?take a book and leave a book? libraries. I gratefully lifted this one from the stack. Although I?ve just begun to read it, I?m already enamored. Unlike a lot of things you read about mental illness, Moore doesn?t believe in trying to simply fix or eradicate our so-called problems, depression and anxiety included.?Did I mention its cataloged as a Psychology book?

Instead understanding the ?messages that lie within the illness,? and ?the necessary changes requested by depression and anxiety,? puts you at a place of emotional well-being versus deprivation or lack. In other words, it?s the difference between believing something is wrong with you, and perceiving your problems as a healthy signal that some area of your life needs attention. It?s all about understanding where your problems come from instead of simply trying to get rid of it. And it makes sense too. It?s the reason why a lot of people find that getting rid of their problem through medication, for example, doesn?t always fix it. But getting to the root of it does.

And this can help explain everything from being more creative to dealing with addiction. Instead of doing away with your problems, you?ll find lasting change in being able to discover the deeper issues often buried beneath. The secret to successfully dealing with any difficulty is to confront it. Avoiding and escaping end up adding to your suffering. As you?ll read in our posts below, acceptance and awareness are key pieces to emotional well-being.

We Need Healthy Self Respect to Be More Creative
(The Creative Mind) ? What holds you back creatively isn?t your competition, the economy, or a lack of opportunities. According to this, your self-confidence, self-worth and ability to accept your limitations have a big impact on your creative success.

No Addiction Without Lies, No Recovery Without Truth
(Addiction Recovery) ? One sign of a breakdown in recovery is dishonesty. Learn why the truth can truly set you free.

One-Moment Meditation
(Mindful Parenting) ? Don?t have a lot of time to meditate? No problem. You just need a single moment. And that moment starts now. Watch this to feel calmer, more mindful and focused in a minute.

Reasons Not To Call A Mistake A Failure
(A Counselor?s Observations) ? What?s the difference between a mistake and a failure? It can actually mean the difference between a temporary set-back and more long-term issues with self-confidence, anxiety, and self-doubt.

How Mindfulness Practice is Basic to Recovery
(The Impact of Sex Addiction) ? Sex addiction recovery involves not just abstaining from unhealthy behaviors, but learning to connect better with yourself and others. Practicing mindfulness is an important aspect of recovery that can help you do just that.

Do You Accept the Science of Climate Change? [Excerpt]

Some reject global warming science thanks to a misinformation campaign funded by fossil-fuel companies

a-newer-world-cover Image: Courtesy of William Hewitt

Editor's Note: Excerpted from A Newer World?Politics, Money, Technology, and What's Really Being Done to Solve the Climate Crisis, by William F. Hewitt. With permission from the publisher, University of New Hampshire Press. Copyright ? William F. Hewitt, 2012. (University of New Hampshire Press is an imprint of University Press of New England, www.upne.com.)

A concerted, focused, and well-funded campaign of disinformation has been waged against climate change.

This attempt to discredit the science, to instill a sense of doubt about the conclusiveness and the extent of the agreement within the scientific community, is a story well told by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway in Merchants of Doubt. Oreskes looked at 928 ? 10 percent ? of all the papers published on climate change in peer-reviewed science journals over a ten-year period. She chose the 928 papers at random. Not one disputed the view that manmade greenhouse gases (GHGs) were causing a catastrophic environmental crisis.

Greenpeace, for one, has published well-documented reports on the funding for climate change denial by ExxonMobil and Koch Industries, among others. Journalists James Hoggan and Ross Gelbspan have also done considerable spadework in uncovering the campaigns mounted by fossil fuel special interests to discredit climate science. Hoggan writes, for instance, that "it's a story of deceit, of poisoning public judgment ? of an anti-democratic attack on our political structures and a strategic undermining of the journalistic watchdogs who keep our social institutions honest."

Gelbspan says, "The reason most Americans don't know what is happening to the climate is that the oil and coal industries have spent millions of dollars to persuade them global warming isn't happening." Greenpeace notes that the ongoing "campaigns against climate science continue to receive funding from big oil and energy interests ? not just ExxonMobil, but a raft of other companies and foundations whose profits are driven by the products that cause global warming."

A prominent public relations consultant, Frank Luntz, wrote a memo in 2000 that was widely circulated among conservatives seeking to debunk climate science and blunt any public policy progress on the issue. "Voters believe there's no consensus about global warming within the scientific community. Should the public come to believe that the scientific issues are settled, their views about global warming will change accordingly. Therefore, you need to continue to make the lack of scientific certainty a primary issue in the debate."

The problem lies in the fact that even though the misinformation and doubt promulgated by the denialists flies directly in the face of the unequivocal evidence produced by scientists over more than 30 years ? and wholly accepted within the scientific community ? the media has too often taken the misinformation at its face value. At best, the media has continuously opined that there is a "debate" in scientific circles. At worst, they have broadcast the most outrageous of the claims being touted.

As early as 1994, Princeton University climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer saw the danger: "What they've done is try to take scientific understanding and put it on the same level with political opinion. After all, if scientific understanding is the same as political opinion, then everybody's opinion is equally valid. There are no facts. And if there are no facts, there is no extra validity to acting on environmental problems than not acting." (As Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan said: "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.")

An older Vega: New insights about the star all others are measured by

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Vega, a star astronomers have used as a touchstone to measure other stars' brightness for thousands of years, may be more than 200 million years older than previously thought. That's according to new findings from the University of Michigan.

The researchers estimated Vega's age by precisely measuring its spin speed with a tool called the Michigan Infrared Combiner, developed by John Monnier, associate professor of astronomy in U-M's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.

MIRC collects the light gathered by six telescopes to make it appear to be coming through one that's 100 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope. It's installed at the Georgia State Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy Array located on Mt. Wilson, California.

The tool boosts resolution so astronomers can zoom in, relatively speaking, to observe the shape and surface characteristics of stars that would otherwise look like mere points even through the most powerful telescopes. By tracking stars' surface characteristics, scientists can calculate how fast they rotate and deduce their inner workings.

Vega is a summer star in the Northern Hemisphere, just visible toward the west at sunset. It's the brightest star in the constellation Lyra. At 25 light years away, Vega is close on cosmic scales. A light year is the distance light travels in one year.

About six years ago astronomers discovered that Vega is rotating so fast it's nearly flinging itself apart. They haven't been able to agree on many of the related details, however. One of the debates centers on Vega's exact rotation rate, which is essential to gauge both its mass and age. Other controversies deal with Vega's tilt as viewed from Earth and the amount of turbulence in the system from roiling gases at the star's surface.

With MIRC's unprecedented resolution, Monnier and his colleagues have taken steps to rectify competing estimates of Vega's rotation rate and other properties The new findings indicate that the star rotates once every 17 hours, rather than once every 12. The sun's equator, for comparison, rotates much slower?once every 27 days, or 648 hours. In addition to finding that Vega is older than previously thought, the Michigan group confirmed its mass to be just over two times the sun's.

"Vega continues to challenge and surprise us," Monnier said. "We found out not too long ago that it has a disk of dusty debris, or a leftover solar system, around it. Then we found out it was a rapid rotator. It's a reference point for other stars, but it certainly isn't boring or normal."

The work will help astronomers build more accurate computer models of stars, so they can simulate those too far away to observe and gain a better understanding of their life cycles.

A paper on the findings is published in the current edition of Astrophysical Journal Letters. It's titled "Resolving Vega and the inclination controversy with CHARA/MIRC." The research is funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA.
