In order to determine if type 2 diabetes is associated with an increased risk of developing colorectal adenomas in younger diabetic patients, Vu and colleagues conducted a retrospective study of patients who?d had a colonoscopy at their center between June 2005 and June 2011.

They assessed three cohorts:

• Those ages 40 to 49 without diabetes
• Healthy patients, ages 50 to 59

A total of 3,749 patients, ages 40 to 49, had a colonoscopy during that time, 125 of whom had diabetes. Vu noted that these younger patients had their colonoscopies for diagnostic purposes, to investigate symptoms such as pain or diarrhea.

The researchers matched patients from the other two cohorts to the diabetes cohort for date of exam and gender.

They found that the adenoma detection rate in the diabetes group was similar to that of healthy patients who started screening at age 50 (30.4% versus 32%).

Those rates were far higher than adenomas detected in patients ages 40 to 49 without diabetes (14.4%), they reported.

That translated to a significantly higher adenoma detection rate for diabetics compared with younger patients without diabetes (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.5 to 5.3) and compared with healthy controls, ages 50 to 59 (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.5 to 5.3).

Unemployment Rates Fall, But So Does Number of Carlton Co. Jobs

Unemployment rates are?falling, but?Carlton County also has fewer jobs than it did one year ago, according to the latest statistics from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.

Carlton County had 16,511 jobs in April, which is 70 less than one year ago.? Still, the unemployment rate for Carlton County?in April was 7.2 percent, down from both one month and one year earlier.

To Do list when used with a well honed process daily is a very productive tool. And the people behind MyLifeOrganized (MLO) have been creating their task management app since the Windows Mobile days.

Windows Mobile

Back then, we don?t have things like Getting Things Done methodology to guide us, but MLO have the best task management solution in my opinion.

Windows Mobile allow tree style hierarchical views, so they were able to create a task and subtask concept which was rare in that days.

To supplement that, they have a very well thought out hierarchical to do list which you can tag due dates, notes and contexts. You can sync this with your windows mobile app.

Playing catch up

What MLO did not anticipate was how well the iPhone and iPod took off and herald a wave of to do list apps like the ones on my side bar.

A very good app rest too much on its laurels and miss a ton of good revenue.

About a year ago, I visited MLO?s homepage and realize that they were frantically churning out their solution for each smartphone platform. I anticipate that they really hired a lot of developers on different platforms to execute this because unlike the makers of Wunderlist who are coming up with their own ubiquitous app Wunderkit, MLO managed to deploy beta versions at a really break neck speed.

So how is their offering?

iPhone MLO

The iPhone app costs USD $9.99 which is the price for all the premium To Do list apps such as 2Do and ToDo.

The thing everyone likes about MLO is that they contain the most essential widgets for task management:

For the iPhone App, they brought over the hierarchical concept. You can create unlimited levels of subtasks.

What you can do on the windows and windows mobile applications you can do it on the iPhone app.

Most of the reviews are from people that have used the windows version of MLO and the reviews are mixed. To most it?s a godsend to be able to carry out the same way of doing things on the iPhone.

For others they cannot understand the complicated interface and they deemed it as complicated and unstable.

iPad MLO

The iPad version costs USD $19.99. That is steep. It essentially is priced in the range of Omnifocus, which is the one David Allen recommends.

It basically does what the iPhone app does but because iPad has a more affordable screen real estate, it makes a splendid project planning tools.

The great thing is it is similar to that of the iPhone app. Unlimited hierachy, repeating, contexts, places and many many different views for people that does things differently

Android MLO

There isn?t a pricing on the Android version. It is Beta currently but soon it will be selling at USD 9.99. That is bloody steep. [Google Play >>]

Although this is a fully featured BETA version of MyLifeOrganized, some features are still in development. You can use the beta version for free until the final product is released. Once the final version has been released, you will have the choice of continuing to use MyLifeOrganized for free in Lite mode, or purchasing a license key to unlock the full feature set. In either case your data will be preserved after the upgrade. Please use our forum for feedback, since we cannot respond on Android Market.

I am an Android smartphone user currently and MLO have been a god send on the Android.

For one, there isn?t a to do list that provides unlimited subtasking like MLO. There are many apps that syncs to Google Tasks but Google Tasks is very limited. For one you cannot create repeatable tasks.

The example above you can see that I have an ?Area of responsibility? in Work, follow by a short project writing a report.

The most useful thing is that I can order the list by cutting tasks and pasting task in the right order.

Kudos to MLO for providing this.

Having start and end dates are what is required for project management. This would filter out tasks not expected to start soon.

You can also change a task into a project and assign multiple contexts, setting subtasks in order.

You can relate contexts with those that belong within another. Take Office Computer. If you tag something as that it will appear if you filter by Office as well.

MLO provides a lot of interesting options. For each tree of tasks if you complete all the tasks you can have MLO create another repeating tree of subtasks.

For projects that you want to reuse, MLO allows you to reset in two ways.

Overall, you would find the settings to be so flexible even if the work flow doesn?t fit you outright, you can tweak it to your liking.

The Android MLO have so many views! You can start drafting by Outline or Projects then filter by which tasks are active at certain places, people or time duration.

And if you think those are the only views that is available to you, check out more.

MLO also offer widgets that you can embed on your home screen

Overall, the people love it.

Blackberry MLO

By now you would know the Blackberry app is more or less similar to the others. The blackberry version costs USD $14.99. Steep.

But I think it is worth it because there isn?t much GTD application that does unlimited subtasking like MLO on blackberry.

MLO Cloud Sync

How does MLO make it ubiquitous? By getting you to subscribe to a cloud sync service.

This would allow you to sync over the air with each device.

The service cost on an average

I have not tried this service but if you subscribe for long $1.25 per month doesn?t sound expensive.

I hope that this would allow me to sync an iPad with an Android smartphone.

Say you need the Windows app and the iPhone app to sync with each other that will set you back $45.95 + $9.99 + $14.95 = $70.89

That is expensive. And if I believe more so then Omnifocus.

I find the solutions very good, but I just cannot except the price.

FACT CHECK: Romney off on Obama's love for unions

When Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney decried President Barack Obama as beholden to the nation's teachers' unions and unable to stand up for reform, he glossed over four years of a relationship that has been anything but cozy.

Obama has promoted initiatives that encourage districts to tie teacher evaluations to student performance and to expand the number of charter schools ? actions the teacher unions have long been against, and which Romney himself promoted Wednesday in a speech in Washington outlining his education platform.

He also painted a bleak picture of a country where millions of kids are getting a "third-world education" and whose international standing has fallen far behind, an assertion frequently used by politicians and debated by academics, though the most recent tests show that U.S. student scores haven't changed significantly and remain about average.

Here are some of Romney's statements on education, and how they line up with the facts:

ROMNEY: "President Obama has been unable to stand up to union bosses ? and unwilling to stand up for kids."

THE FACTS: Several of the core tenets of the Obama administration's signature education initiative, the Race to the Top competition, are policies first heralded by Republicans and are in opposition to the steadfast positions of teacher unions on topics like school choice and merit pay for teachers.

In order to qualify for a slice of the $4 billion allotted for the first two rounds of the grant competition, more than a dozen states changed laws to link teacher evaluations to how well students perform on tests. The Department of Education also rewarded states that had lifted caps on the number of charter schools and created performance pay plans to award teachers whose students have made the most progress.

When a board of trustees in Central Falls, R.I., voted to fire all the teachers at one of the state's worst-performing schools in early 2010, Obama said the dismissals were an example of why accountability is needed at the nation's most troubled schools, causing a furor among union advocates.

At its annual meeting last year, the National Education Association, the country's largest teachers union, sent a message to Obama that it was "appalled" with Education Secretary Arne Duncan's practice of focusing heavily on charter schools, supporting decisions to fire all staff and using high-stakes standardized test scores for teacher evaluations, along with 10 other policies mentioned.

"Obama has taken on teachers unions unlike any previous Democratic president," said Tom Loveless of the Brookings Institution. "Because of that his support among union members, although it is still there, is rather tepid."

THE FACTS: Romney is correct that the NEA and the American Federation of Teachers pull in a lot of cash. The NEA took in more than $399 million in 2011, according to its annual report filed with the U.S. Department of Labor. A similar report from the AFT shows it took in more than $211 million last year.

But neither was at the top of the political spending list four years ago. In 2008, the NEA doled out $29 million to federal, state and local political efforts, federal data show. That ranked them a distant third in political spending by labor unions that year. The Service Employees International Union was first, with $67 million, and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees was second with $63 million.

ROMNEY: "More than 150 years ago, our nation pioneered public education.?We've now fallen way behind."

THE FACTS: Romney backed this assertion with figures from the most recent Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) results, which tests 15-year-olds around the world in math, reading and science. The United States ranked 14th in reading, 17th in science and 25th in math out of 34 developed countries. Those figures have been frequently cited by the Obama administration as well.

The test has only been administered since 2000, and shows U.S. students consistently hovering right around the average, at about the same achievement levels in math and reading as countries like Sweden, the United Kingdom and France. Overall, the U.S. scores are about the same as they were a decade ago, while some countries have improved.

"A better way for him to state it is to say American achievement is mediocre," Loveless said. "It's been mediocre for 50 years."

Romney also asserted that millions of students are getting a "third-world education." Looking again at the PISA test, students in schools where more than 75 percent of children were eligible for free and reduced-price lunch ? a key indicator of poverty ? scored an average of 446 points in reading. That's at about the same level as Chile and Serbia. Meanwhile, those in the wealthiest U.S. schools score nearly as high as the top performer, the Shanghai region of China.

ROMNEY: Students participating in the Washington, D.C., Opportunity Scholarship program made gains and "after three months, students could already read at levels 19 months ahead of their public-school peers."

THE FACTS: Romney's description of the success of the school voucher program, which helps low-income children in the nation's capital attend private elementary, middle and high schools, doesn't match up with Department of Education evaluations.

A congressionally mandated review of the program released in 2009 found that after three years ? not three months ? only some students saw those gains. About one-fourth of children who used the scholarship read 19 months ahead of their peers after three years. In general, however, students' gains were more modest. After three years in the program, students read at about four months ahead of their public-school peers.

A 2010 evaluation of the program found that on average, after four years, reading and math test scores of opportunity scholarship students were statistically similar to those not offered scholarships.

The program did, however, significantly improve students' chances of graduating from high school.

If you've read this blog at all over the last two months, you know we adopted a dog (Roofus) from a local Humane Society Shelter. ?I was actually not too excited about adopting a shelter dog - I was leaning more toward buying a puppy from a breeder. ?I mistakenly thought that all of the dogs in shelters were either very old or problem dogs.


I couldn't have been more wrong!


Not only did we get an exceptionally loving and calm (as in really mellow) sweet dog under two years old, he came already potty trained and knowing a lot of basic commands such as sit and stay. ?Most of the other dogs in the shelter were puppies (so there goes that idea of old dogs - I think we only saw one or two over 4 years old) and none would be described as "problem" dogs. Our shelter even color codes them by personality so that you can get a dog that best matches your family's style.


I've always know the issues surrounding puppy mills and would never buy a dog from a pet store, but since our shelter experience, I have really come to respect what a wonderful service our local?Humane?Society Shelters offer. ?LJ has already announced that he'd like to volunteer there when he is old enough to be a dog walker.


When LJ and I were given the?opportunity?to donate some Del Monte dog treats to a worthy cause, we knew right away we wanted to give them to the shelter where we got Roofus. ?We were able to look up what they needed on their wish list and saw they were in need of treats for training and rewards. ?No wonder Roofus has such a love of Pup-Peroni, Milo's Homestyle Treats, and Milkbone treats - that what he got at the shelter!


LJ and I headed?off to Walmart to pick up some supplies?to donate to the shelter together.

LJ very carefully picked out the varieties of Pup-Peroni he thought the dogs would like best.

The Milo's Homestyle Treats stumped him a bit since there were so many difference choices!

He wound up grabbing one of each!

I had really wanted to make a nice cute gift basket, but we were able to get so many treats with Walmart's low prices that they wouldn't fit in the basket. Add in the two bags of dog food and we needed a box!!

The shelter we were headed to is about 40 minutes away, so we all loaded into the car and set off for our road trip.

We were so impressed that the ladies at the shelter remembered Roofus. ?

They were so happy to see him doing well!

It was a good thing that this little guy was already spoken for - LJ and I were both tempted to bring him home with us!!

Every month, a number of reports about the housing market are released by a variety of sources. Most widely watched is the S&P/Case-Shiller Price Index,?but that is also one of the least timely reports available. Collecting data on home prices takes time and that report is delayed by two months as the data is accumulated through mining court records and thousands of databases around the country.

Case-Shiller also ignores new home sales, relying on matched pairs of sales to create the price index. There are advantages and ?disadvantages to this approach. One of the disadvantages is that new homes can be a leading indicator of the home market.

How new home sales are accounted for

New construction is tracked by the US Department of Commerce. In the most recent announcement, they reported that total housing starts increased to an annualized level of 717,000 units in April. This is a significant improvement from the lows below 500,000. The improvement has been gradual, a sign of sustainable growth, rather than a bubble-like jump.

Home construction has been steady at around 600,000 units a year over the past couple years. After reviewing the latest data, Well Fargo Economic Research commented that, ?While modest, there is real improvement taking place in the housing market.?

The argument for recovery is supported by a separate report that shows the National Association of Homebuilders Housing Market Index?has?increased to a five-year high. The number of building permits issued, an indicator of future activity in the housing market, has also been moving higher since September 2011.

Taken together, there are now a number of signs that the worst is behind us in home prices and although the recovery may not be as fast as most home owners would like to see, there probably won?t be any more steep declines.

Even with the improvement, it is a still a buyers? market in much of the country. Sellers may be finding that they can sell their home, but that prices are far lower than they would like to sell at. Home owners that are at least 62 years old can use a reverse mortgage to wait out the market.

These loans allow home owners to take money out of their homes now without creating an additional monthly bill. Reverse mortgages allow home owners to take advantage of any recovery in prices and sell their home later when it is possible to get a higher price.

Eat Your Vegetables: Adaptation (2002) | Christ and Pop Culture

Each week in?Eat Your Vegetables, Jonathan Sircy shares the benefit and appeal of some of the culture?s more inaccessible or intimidating artifacts.

Change happens. ?In nature. ?In people. ?In art. ?Adaptation (Spike Jonze?s 2002 film now available to stream via Netflix) is about one man trying to figure out how and why it works.

The movie tries to make its titular process more manageable by whittling it down to one man (Charlie Kaufman, played by Nicholas Cage) trying to write one script (ostensibly, the script to the very movie we?re watching) based on one book (The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean, played by Meryl Streep) that is itself about one man (John Laroche, played by Chris Cooper) trying to steal one flower (the ghost orchid).

The plot keeps eating itself, adding layer after layer of self-reference and self-critique, which leads us to the following paradoxes.

1. Charlie Kaufman is most true to Orlean?s book when he betrays it.
2. He can only break The Orchid Thief?s penchant for sprawling meditation by personally wallowing in introspection and self-loathing.
3. Most importantly, he discovers that the only way to write a new and original screenplay is to include every single Hollywood clich? in his script.

The film is so hyper-aware that it starts anticipating your objections to it. Think that protagonist Charlie is self-indulgent and narcissistic? ?Just wait a couple minutes until Kaufman admits to the audience ?just how selfish he is. ?Tired of Charlie?s constant voice-over narration? ?Wait for the scene where script doctor Robert McKee (Brian Cox) warns screenwriters that voiceover narration is sloppy, flaccid writing.

For all of this witty meta-one-upsmanship, the film does make two thought provoking points: adaptation involves all of us and it occurs outside of the conscious decision of any one person. ?In terms of the plot, this means that Charlie only begins to write well when he embraces human contact, and that as he tries to discover how his characters change, he undergoes change quite unintentionally.

But Charlie isn?t the only person undergoing unintentional change. In flashbacks, we get Susan Orlean writing the New Yorker piece that would later become the basis for The Orchid Thief. Her central character is John Laroche.? We learn that Laroche picks up and leaves obsessions at a mere whim. ?He doesn?t even try to explain why or what causes them. ??Let me tell you a story,? he?ll tell Orlean before regaling her about his torrid love affair with something he no longer cares about. One such story concludes with Laroche?s matter-of-fact, ?Through with fish.? ?Laroche spares Orelan a Damascus story, a moment of blinding light that makes him re-evaluate his life. ?The fish obsession simply ends, without pomp or circumstance, and another fascination sits there waiting to take its place. ?His renunciation is so complete that he forsakes the very ocean because it?s associated with the spurned fish. ?In voiceover, Orlean expresses bewilderment at how Laroche could simply leave something he once loved so passionately.

This covers over one of the film?s biggest questions: why doesn?t he care that his obsession just died? ?What is even more amazing than Laroche?s fickle passions is his refusal to psychologize or rationalize what is something that happens to him, or appears to come from something outside of him.

This complicates the assertion made by Donald Kaufman (also Nicholas Cage), Charlie?s twin brother, that you are what you love, not what loves you. ?Donald?s quotation works well for if you?re signing someone?s yearbook, but it deceptively covers over the film?s argument. ?It?s true that you are what you love, but Donald leaves out the following caveat:?in the world of the film, you don?t get to choose what you love. ? ?Now, once love has taken possession of you, it is your duty to hold on to it, to own it. ?But you didn?t buy it for yourself. ?Adaptation is not, strictly speaking, a conscious act.

In this movie, movies themselves are therapeutic. Charlie?s conversion experience happens at a scriptwriting workshop. He learns to be a better writer from his brother Donald, who is himself a screenwriter. ?As is often the case in Kaufman?s films, no one ever thinks of God.

Kaufman?s films are interesting thought experiments where we?re shown situations that scream ?Creation!?, ?Fall!?, ?Redemption!? but remain wholly secular. Kaufman has depersonalized God and called him Adaptation, to which I respond, He is working in and through creation whether you notice Him or not.
